The other day I saw an ad for two VHF radios that I would be fond of. Before I make this decision on these VHF radios, Could someone here tell me how good the distance of communication is with VHF radios? Are they high-quality or low-quality? Also, someone told me that VHF radios will be more constructive at ground level if I were going around 1/2 mile, assuming that both operators were inside structures, is this statement true?

I was hoping that someone could help me out with these questions. I know, I could research this matter all day, but I need to hear it personally from someone, not read it from a website.
Thanks and any answers regarding my questions would be perfectly fine,
